Therianthropy as identity: Behaviors, social expressions, and cyberbullying

Therianthropy is a form of alterhuman identity characterized by identification with one or more non-human animals. This essay analyzes its psychological nature, its distinction from clinical zoanthropy, and proposes a functional hypothesis regarding its acquisition and maintenance from a behavior-analytic perspective. It also examines several expressions associated with this identity, discusses arguments commonly used to pathologize it, and addresses cyberbullying directed toward this community. It is concluded that therian identity does not, in itself, constitute a psychopathology and should be distinguished from clinical phenomena characterized by delusions, perceptual disturbances, and significant distress.
